All guests benefit from the direct use of Holywell Field, directly below the yard and accessible from the rear of the cottages. Naturally landscaped, Dartmoor is brought right to your doorstep with magnificent granite boulders dotted about, enclosed by dry stone walls and surrounded by the most spectacular views and scenery. On one boundary of the field is a copse filled with wild flowers and on the other is the start of the ancient sunken green lane.

Guests have exclusive access to the majority of the 400 acre Holwell estate and maps will clearly indicate where this access is available. The map also highlights walks, places of interest, wildlife habitat, areas of historical and archeological importance together with suggested spots for picnics, a spot of fishing or a paddle in the Becka Brook. There is also designated areas for bbqs.

Holwell is a working farm and it should be borne in mind that yes, the cockerels do wake you up nice and early and there is sometimes a nice rustic aroma, particularly when Sebastian is muck spreading in the top fields. As many of you will have observed up to date, we are not advocates of the "Nanny State" for written and obvious warnings, we rely on common sense to prevail !

Animals on the farm include pedigree Saddleback Pigs, Galloway Cattle, Dartmoor Ponies, Horses, Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Doves, Guinea Fowl, Dogs; not all are free range however!, but if you are bringing dogs and or children, please ensure they are appropriately behaved with these animals!

It may interest you to know that Holwell has been and is the subject of a Television Series which is being made for Regional and Discovery channels to be broadcast next year. Titled "Forgotten Farm" the programme is following the progress of resurrecting this important farmstead and recording its gradual entry into the 21st century. It will commence its 10 part series on January 10th on ITV Westcountry and worldwide on Discovery Channel from April 2006.
